Deepening the Practice of Silent Illumination

The 7-Day Chan Meditation Retreat offers experienced practitioners the opportunity to deepen their meditation practice through continuous cultivation, silence, and an immersive monastic environment.

During seven days of structured practice, participants will train in Silent Illumination (Mozhao), one of the central meditation methods of Chan Buddhism, cultivating stability of mind, clear awareness, and deeper insight.

Through extended periods of sitting meditation, walking meditation, Dharma teachings, and mindful daily activities, this intensive Chan retreat creates the conditions for developing a more profound and stable meditation practice.

The retreat builds upon the foundation established in previous 3-day Chan meditation retreats and is designed for practitioners who wish to move beyond introductory practice and deepen their experience of Chan meditation.

The retreat will be held in English at Lien Tam Monastery in Turku, Finland.

What Is Chan Meditation?

Chan meditation is a centuries-old Buddhist meditation tradition that aims to cultivate a clear, stable, and awakened mind.

The practice is not simply a method for relaxation or stress reduction. Chan meditation is a path of training the mind, helping practitioners understand their thoughts, emotions, habits, and patterns of attachment more clearly.

Through consistent practice, we learn to develop concentration, mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion. The purpose of meditation is not to escape everyday life, but to transform our relationship with ourselves, others, and the challenges we encounter.

The Practice of Silent Illumination

Silent Illumination (Mozhao) is one of the principal meditation methods of Chan Buddhism, transmitted within the Dharma Drum Mountain tradition.

It naturally integrates Samatha (calm abiding) and Vipassana (insight) into a unified practice of open awareness.

Rather than suppressing thoughts or striving for special experiences, practitioners learn to rest with an open, clear, and aware mind in the present moment.

Thoughts, emotions, and sensations are allowed to arise and pass without attachment. Through continuous awareness, the mind gradually becomes more stable, peaceful, and luminous.

As the practice deepens, habitual patterns, attachments, and mental obstacles become increasingly visible. Through understanding and awareness, practitioners develop greater freedom, equanimity, compassion, and wisdom.

During this 7-day Chan meditation retreat, extended periods of sitting meditation and walking meditation provide the ideal environment for deepening Silent Illumination and establishing a stable meditation practice.

Why a 7-Day Intensive Retreat?

A longer retreat period allows the mind to gradually settle beyond the habits and distractions of everyday life.

During the first days of intensive practice, practitioners may encounter restlessness, physical discomfort, emotions, or habitual thought patterns. Through continuous meditation, mindfulness, and guidance, the mind gradually develops greater stability and clarity.

The purpose of intensive practice is not to escape daily life, but to understand the nature of the mind more deeply and bring greater awareness, wisdom, and compassion into everyday activities.

A seven-day retreat provides the time and conditions necessary for meditation practice to mature.

Noble Silence and Digital Simplicity

The 7-Day Chan Meditation Retreat is conducted in noble silence.

Silence is not an end in itself, but a supportive condition for turning the attention inward and allowing deeper concentration and awareness to develop.

By reducing unnecessary communication and external distractions, participants create the space to observe the mind more clearly and deepen their meditation practice.

To support this process, participants are encouraged to take a mindful break from digital distractions. At the beginning of the retreat, mobile phones will be collected and safely stored until the end of the retreat. In case of an emergency, participants can remain reachable at any time through the meditation center.

Voluntary Contribution (Dāna)

Participation in this retreat is based on voluntary contribution (Dāna).

In Buddhism, Dāna means generosity — giving without expectation of receiving something in return. It is an important foundation of Buddhist practice and expresses gratitude, trust, and compassion.

Our Buddhist community follows the traditional principle of relying on voluntary generosity. This allows people to participate in Dharma practice independent of their financial circumstances.

We invite participants to offer according to their own possibilities and with a sincere heart.
